Feminist Press
Jisu Kim, Senior Sales and Marketing Manager
I am a senior member of a small team that constitutes the nonprofit, independent publisher Feminist Press, based in New York City. The Feminist Press publishes books that ignite movements and social transformation. Founded in 1970, we began as a crucial publishing component of second wave feminism, reprinting feminist classics by writers such as Zora Neale Hurston and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and providing much-needed texts for the developing field of women’s studies with books. We publish feminist literature from around the world by best-selling authors, and North American writers of diverse race and class experience. We have become the vanguard for award-winning books on contemporary feminist issues of equality and gender identity. Celebrating our legacy of more than fifty years, we lift up insurgent and marginalized voices from around the world to build a more just future.
I oversee our marketing, sales, publicity, inventory, and other select book-related operations, and I also acquire and edit books (averaging about 1-2 titles per year). As an editor, my main area of interest is titles featuring Asian and Asian diasporic experiences, both original English-language titles and works in translation. My most recent acquisition to be published is the forthcoming novel Violets, by Korean author Shin Kyung-sook and translated by Anton Hur, made possible with support by the LTI. I also have experience editing graphic story collections, novels, and multi-author anthologies. In regards to my larger role at FP, I have built and manage successful publishing campaigns for a wide range of authors; as a direct result of our support and promotion, these writers have won major literary awards and received critical acclaim both in the US and abroad.
Feminist Press publishes twelve to fifteen books a year and specializes in an array of genres including cutting-edge fiction, activist nonfiction, literature in translation, hybrid memoirs, children’s books, and more. FP seeks to champion intersectional and nuanced works that spark much-needed dialogue and move the international feminist conversation forward. We do not publish poetry, dramatic works, doctoral dissertations, or literary criticism.
For work in translation, FP usually publishes groundbreaking, edgy work by new and emerging writers critiquing societal issues in their home country, or work by established women or feminist writers who have not yet broken into the English-language world. Given the recent interest in Korean culture abroad, particularly in the US, I seek writing that presents a complicated, nuanced portrait of Korean society. Themes of particular interest include LGBTQ+ issues in Korea, class and labor dynamics, post-1990s work and anti-work culture, SF or speculative/fantastical elements, technology, and environmental issues.
I would like to take this opportunity to review nonfiction by Korean authors, to see if there would be any potential for US readership and interest. While there has been a rise in Korean fiction in translation in the English-language market, I believe there is also the possibility for nonfiction to be of interest as well.
