Giunti, an independent publisher, is the third publishing group in Italy. It’s run by the Giunti family who founded it in 1841. As a leader in the sector of children’s books, we also publish adult fiction and nonfiction, illustrated manuals, psychology books, schoolbooks, art books, and magazines.
On the whole, we publish more than 1,000 titles per year with a catalogue of more than 8,000, with more than 70 different imprints that cover a wide range of subject matter.
Our books are distributed over the entire national territory through a wide net of channels. From the smallest bookshops to supermarkets, wholesalers, special point of sales, and online. Our first distribution reaches almost 1,500 point of sales, a figure that doesn’t include another 800 locations in banks, drugstores, and newspaper kiosks.
The most important asset of our publishing house is a network of 225 privately owned bookshops all over Italy, the so-called GAP (Giunti al Punto). Most are located in major shopping malls or in the city centre, as well as in airports and train stations. Giunti al Punto is the largest chain in Italy in terms of number of shops.
In 2015 the publishing house bought the Italian publishing division of Disney, a major acquisition for strengthening the leadership in the children’s book industry. In December 2016, Giunti acquired the prestigious publishing house Bompiani from Mondadori. In February 2020 Giunti acquired 20 percent of the UK-based Quarto Publishing Group, which operates in more than 50 countries.
Since the new Giunti fiction lists have been launched ten years ago, we have had the pleasure to bring to success several début authors and establish new best-seller authors. This is especially relevant for the women’s fiction genre, with both Italians and foreign authors, and for the crime and thriller list.
We are the lucky publisher of Lucinda Riley, who is now a bestseller with 40 million copies sold worldwide (2 million in Italy alone) and Corina Bomann (700,000 copies in Italy). Other bestsellers of our women’s fiction list include Anne Jacobs’s Die Tuchvilla saga (200,000 copies), Susanne Goga, and Rachel Joyce. These are novels that offer a getaway from everyday life, stories for all kinds of women: moving and romantic, ironic and contemporary, funny and entertaining—family sagas, crossovers—books that in some way are able to touch women’s hearts.
On the crime and thriller side, our bestsellers are Romy Hausmann’s Liebeskind, Brenda Novak’s series set in Alaska, Jacopo De Michelis’s The Station, Marco Malvaldi’s The Measure of Man (a historical thriller with protagonist Leonardo da Vinci), and Lucy Foley’s The Hunting Party. We look for crime, thriller, domestic and psychological suspense, and page turners with great twists and rhythm.
We also have a small literary list of mainly Italian authors and a few foreign ones, in which we publish new and established literary voices that can be accessible to a wide audience.
I am particularly interested in thrillers, as Korea has made itself famous in this genre not only through books but also through movies and the touching and poetic stories of Kyung-sook Shin and Ji-Young Gong.
