I am an Editor at Hamish Hamilton, Penguin Random House UK, where I work on literary fiction and non-fiction, working with authors such as Bernardine Evaristo, Zadie Smith and Arundhati Roy. I am an editor for Five Dials magazine, and the series editor for Black Britain: Writing Back. I am also Policy and Campaigns Consultant for the campaign ‘Lit in Colour’; run by PRH and the Runnymede Trust, the campaign aims to diversify the English GCSE curriculum. I am a Trustee at education equality charity The Brilliant Club and a Board Member of Creative UK. In 2021, I won the LBF Trailblazer Award and Rising Star Award in Arts and Media at the Black British Business Awards, and was named as a future leader on the EMpower Ethnic Minority Future Leader list.
Across Penguin General, we publish many works in translation. Viking Books publish the European Writers series, which features translated forgotten twentieth-century classics by authors of different European nationalities. Penguin General won Publisher of the Year in the British Book Awards in 2019, and has been shortlisted for publisher of the year every year for the last 6 years. Hamish Hamilton has also been nominated for Imprint of the Year multiple times in recent years. Hamish Hamilton is known for its literary excellence, and we have published work in translation in the past – from Patrick Suskind’s Perfume, to Mo Yan’s Frog.
Many of my favourite authors are Korean – including Frances Cha, Cho Nam-Ju, Michelle Zauner and Cathy Park Hong – so I have long been interested in expanding my knowledge of the literature scene, as I feel that there must be so many gems that I have not yet been able to access. If I Had Your Face was a favourite book of 2020 – an insightful, beautiful look at beauty, friendship and competition. Kim Ji-young, Born 1982 was also incredible – I thought it was fantastically written, and completely upended expectations of feminist fiction. Literary fiction and literary non-fiction are the two areas where I commission, and so this is where I would love to expand my knowledge.
