“Sanzini” refers to the native Korean hawk known for its high-flying ability and great endurance. The name reflects our wish to stand firm in the tough local publishing world. Founded in 2005, Sanzini has published some 700 titles in a wide range of areas including humanities, social sciences, politics, and literature. In 2015, we received the Best Management and Sales Prize from the Korean Publishing Science Society. In the same year, in celebration of Sanzini’s 10th anniversary, our staff members wrote and published The Joys of Running a Local Publishing House, the one and only survival story of a local publishing house in Korea; the book was later published in Taiwan.
Sanzini is based in Busan. While the hub of the country’s publishing industry is located in Seoul and Paju, Sanzini contributes to enhancing cultural democracy by publishing books with distinctive local flavor. As Korea’s second largest city, Busan boasts a rich natural environment with rivers, mountains, and beaches. Having witnessed key moments in the modern history of Korea, Busan is now widely known as a city of film—centered around the Busan International Film Festival. Sanzini aims to create content based on Busan’s unique environment, history, and culture. Our writers include poet Choe Young-chol, novelist Jo Gapsang, Professor Gu Mo-ryong, and Journalist Park Jong-ho, who are all based in Busan and South Gyeongsang Province. In addition to discovering and reinterpreting the local culture, we delve into universal human issues across different genres with the aim of publishing books that make people happy.

Books in the Spotlight
- Eye of the Night is the winner of the 2012 Manhae Literature Prize. In the fictional town of Daejin-eup, a massacre of civilians takes place in connection with the Bodo League. The novel explores the fear, sadness, and horror of darkness and silence, and shows how people are forced to become silent and suppress their memories.
- Red Island is a novel about the Jeju April 3rd Incident, the truth of which has only recently surfaced in Korean society. In the modern history of Korea, the Jeju 4.3 Incident caused the second highest number of casualties after the Korean War. Based on his extensive research, writer Kim Yucheol delves into the tragic history of Jeju Island and its people who suffered the impact of the ideological clash between great powers around the time of liberation. The novel was selected for the 2015 Book to Film at the Busan International Film Festival. - Thinking People is the winner of the 2018 Yosan Kim Jeonghan Literary Award. The writer based the novel on her own experience of teaching and observing teenagers at the Settlement Support Center for North Korean Refugees commonly known as Hanawon. North Korean defectors cross the border at the risk of their own lives and arrive in South Korea only to encounter another type of darkness. A book trailer is available on our YouTube channel in Korean and English—produced with support from the Publication Industry Promotion Agency of Korea.
- The Fourth Way to Utopia was selected as one of Art Council Korea’s 2021 Books for Sharing. The story of people trying to build a new utopia in their dreams reminds us of the true meaning of Utopia. Using his sharp insights, writer Jeong Gwangmo points to some of the social portents experienced by modern humanity, and thus keeps the incidents moving from the depth of the novel.
- Hyesu, Haesu: Soul Predator is a YA novel. A high school student named Hyesu gets entangled in a relationship with Haesu, a fresh-faced messenger of death and her spirit-general. Together, the pair encounter various difficulties. The story of the living and the afterlife highlights the inevitable finiteness of life—even though those faced with impending death may want to linger a little longer. The novel was selected for the 2021 Busan International Film Festival Asia Contents & Film Market E-IP Market.
산지니는 가장 높이 날고 오래 버티는 우리나라의 전통 매를 말하는 것으로, 척박한 지역출판의 환경 속에서 오래 버티고자 하는 바람을 담고 있습니다. 2005년 설립 이후 현재까지 인문, 사회, 정치,문학 등 다양한 분야에서 700여 종의 단행본을 발간했으며, 2015년에는 한국출판학회로부터 경영·영업부문 대상을 수여하였고 같은 해, 창립 10주년을 기념해 산지니 직원들이 함께 집필한 국내 유일의 지역출판 생존기, 『지역에서 행복하게 출판하기』를 펴내기도 했습니다. 이 책은 대만으로 수출되어 대만판이 출간되어 있습니다.

소개하고 싶은 장르와 작품
- 『밤의 눈』: 2013년 만해문학상을 수상한 작품으로, 6.25전쟁 당시 가상의 공간 대진읍을 배경으로 국민보도연맹과 관련한 민간인 학살을 다룬 소설입니다. 이 작품은 어둠과 침묵 속의 두려움, 슬픔, 공포를 건져올리며 또한 그 속에서 사람들이 어떻게 말을 잃거나 기억을 강제로 저지당했는지를 보여줍니다.
- 『레드 아일랜드』: 한국 사회에서도 그 진실이 드러난지 그리 오래되지 않은 제주 4.3 사태를 소재로 한 장편소설입니다. 제주 4.3사태는 한국현대사에서 한국전쟁 다음으로 많은 희생자가 발생한 사건입니다. 김유철 작가는 치열한 자료조사를 바탕으로 해방 전후 열강들의 이념 싸움에 억울한 피해 장소가 된 제주의 아픈 역사와 그 시절 제주 사람들의 이야기를 소설로 녹여냈습니다. 이 작품은 2015년 부산국제영화제 ‘북투필름(Book to Film)'에 선정된 바 있으며, 한국출판문화산업진흥원의 지원을 받아 제작된 한국어, 스페인어 북트레일러 영상이 유튜브 “채널산지니”에 업로드되어 있습니다.
- 『생각하는 사람들』: 2018년 요산김정한문학상 수상작으로, 북한이탈주민정착지원사무소 하나원 내의 청소년 학교에서 파견교사로 근무했던 작가가 탈북 청소년들의 삶을 지켜보며 집필한 작품입니다. 목숨을 걸고 국경을 넘어 남한으로 온 사람들인 탈북자들이 남한에서 겪게 되는 또 다른 어둠을 그려내고 있습니다. 이 작품은 한국출판문화산업진흥원의 지원을 받아 제작된 한국어, 영어 북트레일러 영상이 유튜브 “채널산지니”에 업로드되어 있습니다.
- 『유토피아로 가는 네 번째 방법』: 2021년 한국문화예술위원회 문학나눔 선정도서로, 꿈속에서 유토피아의 건설을 꾀하는 인물들을 통해 진정한 유토피아의 의미를 되짚는 장편소설입니다. 예리한 통찰력을 발휘하여 현대인들이 겪고 있는 사회적 징후를 서사에 녹여내는 작가의 방식은 소설의 밑바닥에서 사건을 움직이게 만드는 동력으로 작용합니다.
- 『혜수, 해수 1』: 여고생 선무당 혜수와 앳된 저승사자 해수가 무당과 신장으로 연결되어 고난과 어려움을 함께 헤쳐 나가는 과정을 그린 청소년 소설입니다. 이승과 저승이라는 소재를 통해 죽음을 맞이하는 이들은 당연히 남기고 갈 것들이 아쉽겠지만 인생은 유한하고, 언젠가는 끝을 맞이해야 하는 삶의 의미를 묵묵히 전달해줍니다. 이 작품은 2021년 부산국제영화제 아시아콘텐츠&필름마켓 E-IP 마켓에 선정되어 많은 관계사에게 소개된 바 있습니다.
