Serpent's Tail

We are an award-winning literary imprint which was established in 1986 with a mission to introduce readers to exciting, innovative writing by a diverse range of authors both from the UK and around the world. Serpent’s Tail is an imprint of the independent publishing house Profile Books and is based in London, England. We are the British home of authors including Sarah Perry, Karen Joy Fowler and Carmen Maria Machado and recently launched a sister imprint, Viper, which publishes crime, mystery and thriller fiction.
I am a Commissioning Editor at Serpent’s Tail and have worked at the company for over four years. My passions include gothic fiction, historical fiction, short stories, literary memoirs, and fiction in translation. I also look after our Serpent’s Tail Classics list. I like dark humour, strong narrative voices and plot-driven narratives.
I am interested in literary fiction that gives new insight and knowledge into how life is lived in Korea or experienced by Korean people but which simultaneously engages with common global concerns like love, work, friendship, family and nature. The ideal work in translation is one which retains the distinctiveness of the original language and culture from which it sprang but has the capacity to connect with readers who may not immediately be familiar with these. Some examples of the type of novels by Korean authors I would most love to look at in the future include Han Kang’s The Vegetarian, Un-su Kim’s The Plotters and Shin Kyung-Sook’s The Court Dancer. I have recently acquired Ewhan Kim's The Black Orb (forthcoming 2024).

한국에서의 삶 또는 한국인들이 경험하는 삶에 대한 새로운 통찰력과 지식을 제공하며 동시에 사랑, 일, 우정, 가족, 자연과 같은 세계적 공통 관심사를 다루는 소설을 찾고 있습니다. 훌륭한 번역서는 원본 언어와 문화의 고유성을 유지하면서도 이를 낯설게 여기는 새로운 독자와 연결될 수 있어야 한다고 생각합니다. 저의 눈길을 끌만한 한국문학의 예시로 한강 작가의 『채식주의자』, 김언수 작가의 『설계자들』, 신경숙 작가의 『리진』을 들 수 있습니다. 최근 김이환 작가의 『검은 구』 영역본(2024년 출간예정) 계약을 체결했습니다.
