Zephyr Press is a non-profit independent publishing house whose titles and literary events foster a deeper understanding of cultures and languages. Founded in 1980, Zephyr shifted from the publication of American fiction to literature in translation with the release of the two-volume hardcover edition of The Complete Poems of Anna Akhmatova in 1990, translated from the Russian by Judith Hemschemeyer. We focus primarily on contemporary poetry in translation from Central and Eastern Europe and East Asia, with a particular emphasis on works from Chinese (Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong), Korean, Russian and Polish. We also publish literature from other languages and the U.S., and reprint books of literary and historical value that have long been out of print. We also organize bilingual readings, educational workshops and other cross-cultural exchanges in the U.S. and abroad. The majority of publications are presented bilingually—with both original language and translation, and a critical introduction. Zephyr books have been awarded and listed as a finalist for a wide range of literary awards, including the Griffin International Poetry Prize, PEN Poetry in Translation Award, Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize, National Translation Award, the Best Translated Book Award, and the Northern California Book Award. Based on the success of our first three titles in Korean translation, we are currently working on the development of new titles from Korean, including a collection by Kim Haengsook, as translated by Mia You.
I am primarily interested in expanding Zephyr Press to include writers that will complement our current list, including writers like Yi Won, Han Yujoo and Kim Hyesoon. Though Zephyr primarily publishes poetry in translation, I also would be interested in discussing works of flash fiction. As noted earlier in this application, we are currently working on a book by Kim Haengsook (tr. by Mia You), and are considering a ms. by Yoo Heekyung (tr. by Stine An). I also believe there would be great interest in another collection in translation by Kim Minjeong. As noted in Point 3, a brief trip to Seoul funded by LTI Korea several years ago was of great assistance in helping me to kickstart Zephyr’s line of Korean literature in translation. Since the publication of Don Mee Choi’s anthology Anxiety of Words, the Zephyr editorial team had been considering publishing further titles of Korean literature in translation, but it wasn’t until I was able to sit down and discuss Zephyr’s list with publishers and authors in Seoul that we were able to take the next step along that path.

제퍼 프레스는 도서 출간 및 문학 행사를 통해 다양한 문화와 언어에 대한 보다 깊은 이해를 촉진하는 비영리 독립 출판사입니다. 1980년에 설립된 후, 미국 소설을 주로 다루다가 러시아 시인 안나 아흐마또마 전집 양장본(총 2권, Judith Hemschemeyer 번역) 출간을 계기로 번역문학으로 전환하였습니다. 현재는 동유럽, 중유럽 및 동아시아의 현대시 번역본 출간에 힘쓰고 있으며, 특히 중국어(중국, 대만, 홍콩), 한국어 및 폴란드어에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 또한 미국 및 기타 언어권의 문학을 출간할 뿐만 아니라 오랫동안 절판되었지만 문학적, 역사적 가치가 있다고 판단되는 도서의 재출간도 진행하고 있습니다. 나아가 미국 안팎에서 이중언어 낭독회, 교육 워크숍 및 기타 문화교류 행사를 기획합니다.

과거 세 종의 한국 도서 번역본을 성공적으로 소개한 경험을 바탕으로 새로운 한국 도서 출간을 기획하고 있으며 여기에는 김행숙 작가(Mia You 번역)의 시집이 포함됩니다. 그 외 이원 작가, 한유주 작가, 김혜순 작가에도 많은 관심을 갖고 있습니다.
